DUST STORM RESPONSE
*Dust storm, yellow sand or 'Kosa' is a unique emergency situation that is common to Korea, China and Japan
*How each country respond to emergency situations brought about by dust storms would also be applicable to how each of the country would respond to emergency air pollution situation.

Type of response China Japan Korea
Year started reporting Has been included in meteorological report since 2007. Has been releasing information since 2004. Performs Kosa forecasts since 2002
Short term forcasting Uses satellite images to mopnitor the movement of dust Japan Meteorological Administration (JMA) provides a distribution map of points near Japan where Kosa has been observed (Korea Meteorological Administration), KMA analyses airborne dust and weather satellite images of Kosa originating from source areas
Next day forecast are available. monitors horizontal distribution of Kosa
Short term forecast and warnings, medium term forecast and seasonal outlooks predicts passage over Korea
Long term forecasting and monitoring no long term forecasting reported to public JMA also provides a map predicting the distribution of Kosa based on forecasting model. predicts deposition of sand based on predicted airflow and atmospheric pressure patterns.
monitors the density of PM10 and PM2.5
KMA uses data transfer system that shares information in real time (5-min intervals)
applies real time data to the Kosa forecast/warning system in its weather data system
